I got on ChatGPT on a new, free account (like most people would). I also did this in Incognito on my browser so that my history with Chat wouldn’t skew the results.

Here’s the prompt I used.

"I’m in Decatur, Ga. I need a good plumber for a sewer backup. What are some good plumbers near me?"

Here’s the results:

Google returned about 20 results to me in Google Maps. (Some of the sponsored listings are listed twice.)

In Chat, there are 7 total. 3 of those are highlighted as the ones you should call first.

More importantly…

Of all the 20 or so results in Maps, only 3 of those are found in ChatGPT!

If you owned one of the other 17 businesses, how would you feel?

That’s SHOCKING, like I said.

But if you dig a little deeper, here’s what’s happening.

A lot of people are using Google for searching AND ALSO using Chat to understand both the problem they're trying to solve (backed up sewer), and also to find the best products and/or services to buy.

My son came home and his car was dragging something underneath it.

He had hit a tall curb that he didn't see.

The thing dragging under the car was a piece of sheet metal normally attached to the bottom of the car designed to protect the engine from dirt and stuff thrown up by the road.

To understand the problem, I took a picture of it and sent that to Chat.

It told me all about the problem.

I then asked where I should get it fixed near me.

It suggested a few places.

I looked up a couple of them in Google, found one that seemed familiar, and called them.

The car is now being fixed by that garage…partially because they were suggested by Chat.

What I just showed you...

A: Asking Chat (or any AI) about something so you can understand it

B: Asking for business recommendations

C: Googling them

That 3-step dance is how people buy stuff nowadays!

A business can appear in Google just fine. But if the AIs can’t access enough information about the business, it might not be among the ones that the AI recommends.

What I just described here is a BIG PROBLEM!
